When to Start Cow Milk for Babies — Age, Quantity and Safety Precautions

Dr. Sandip Gupta

Many parents ask when to start cow milk for children. This video covers the age, the right way to give it, how much per day, and the precautions. 0 to 6 months — do not give cow milk at all. Cow milk is made for a calf. Its protein content is higher, which is often not easy for small babies to digest. It also has a higher sodium content, which can cause problems in the child's kidneys, and cow milk is somewhat low in iron. For all these reasons, cow milk should not be given from birth up to 6 months (180 days). After 6 months. As per the current WHO guideline, cow milk can be started after the child is 180 days old. Cow milk can be used in two ways: as an alternative to mother's milk, or by cooking cereals such as dalia, rice and suji in cow milk. The doctor's personal opinion for 6–12 months: It is better to give cow milk by cooking a cereal in it, because that balances out the higher protein in cow milk, makes it easier to digest, and balances the nutrition. Cow milk as a drink for 6–12 months — the order of preference: First: mother's milk. Second: formula milk — although formula is made from cow milk, the company changes the composition to bring it close to the composition of mother's milk, so it is easier for the baby to digest. Third: cow milk — give it as a drink only if mother's milk is insufficient and you cannot give stage 2 formula milk, whether because you cannot afford it or do not want to give it. Above 1 year: Cow milk should be started as milk, and should be given boiled. Packet milk vs milk from a milkman: Good company packet milk is properly pasteurised, killing the germs and bacteria in it. If you take it from a milkman, keep two things in mind — boil the milk well at home, and make sure there is no adulteration such as water, and that the cow whose milk you are taking is healthy. How much cow milk per day: 1 to 2 years: 300 to 500 ml a day. 2 to 5 years: 480 to 600 ml total a day. Do not give more than this. Too much cow milk means the child will not eat food, and if the child does not eat, weight does not increase. Also, cow milk is low in iron, so too much of it causes iron deficiency in children, which further reduces appetite and can weaken immunity. Alongside cow milk: Give the child iron-rich food, and start iron supplementation after 6 months. The doctor mentions he will make separate videos on when to start curd, chhena, paneer, cheese and other milk products for children.
