Newborn Baby Care Tips: Hygiene, Vaccination & 5 Common Mistakes to Avoid

Dr. Sandip Gupta

This video covers basic hygiene and care rules for newborn babies, along with 5 common early mistakes parents make and how to avoid them. What is covered in this video: Hand hygiene: A newborn's immunity is weak, so hands should be washed with soap or sanitized before touching or holding the baby. Clothing and temperature control: Dress the baby in just one extra layer compared to adults. Avoid dressing them in 5-6 layers, as excessive clothing can cause sweating, discomfort, and skin rashes. In cold weather, use caps, mittens, and socks, and prefer cotton clothing. Timely vaccination: Vaccines given right after birth (BCG, OPV, Hepatitis B) and at 6, 10, and 14 weeks should be given on schedule. 5 common early mistakes and how to avoid them: Giving honey, ghutti, or sugar water right after birth: Honey should never be given to a child under 1 year of age, as it carries a serious risk of Infant Botulism. Right after birth, only the mother's first thick yellow milk (colostrum) should be given, as it is a natural immunity booster for the baby. Applying kajal in the eyes: Kajal particles can block the eye's drainage duct, increasing the risk of constant watering, allergy, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). Applying ghee or turmeric on the umbilical cord: Until the umbilical cord stump dries and falls off on its own (7-10 days), nothing — no oil, ghee, turmeric, or water — should be applied to it. It should be kept dry and clean. Forceful massage or pulling the arms/legs: Massaging a baby by hanging them upside down or twisting their arms/legs does not strengthen bones — it risks injury instead. Massage should always be done with very light and gentle hands, for love and bonding. Using mustard oil: Mustard oil is heavy and irritating, and can cause rashes or allergy on a baby's delicate skin. Coconut oil is the safest and better choice for massage.
