Iron for Kids: Signs of Deficiency, Best Food Sources, Supplement Tips & 7 Recipes

Dr. Sandip Gupta

A pediatrician explains why iron is one of the most important nutrients for a child's brain development, the signs of iron deficiency, which foods provide iron without extra expense, common mistakes that cause iron deficiency in children, how to manage constipation from iron supplements, and 7 iron-rich recipes. Covered in this video: Why iron matters for brain development Research shows that iron deficiency at a young age weakens memory power, affects brain development, causes difficulty in studies later, and leads to behaviour problems. Iron deficiency also causes iron deficiency anemia (low blood/haemoglobin). In India, about 32% of children have iron deficiency — roughly one in every three children. Signs of iron deficiency Reduced appetite — the child avoids food or runs away from it. Pica — eating non-food items like paper, wall paint, chalk, ice or mud. The child becomes lethargic and shows less interest in playing. Frequent illness, because low iron means low blood and weaker immunity. Irritability, stubborn behaviour, and sometimes breath-holding spells (holding the breath while crying). In severe deficiency causing anemia, the child's skin colour looks pale/white. If these signs appear, see a doctor, get an iron test done and take proper treatment. Iron-rich foods (no extra cost, from regular home food) — organised into 5 groups: Non-veg (best absorbed "heme iron"): egg, chicken, meat. Green vegetables: spinach (palak), broccoli, coriander or mint leaves, chaulai saag, methi saag, drumstick (sahjan) leaves. Dals/legumes: soybean dal (or tofu/soy chunks if soybean is hard to digest), masoor dal, moong dal, chana dal, rajma, green peas. Dry fruits: raisins, prunes (dried aloo bukhara), dates, figs (anjeer), apricots. Grains: ragi, quinoa, whole wheat atta, oats. Nuts and seeds: sunflower seeds, sesame (til) seeds, cashew, almond — for children under 5, give these only as powder or paste, never whole; flax seed powder can also be included. Common mistakes that cause iron deficiency Giving too much cow's milk — children aged 1–5 years need only about 500 ml milk; more than that reduces iron absorption due to high calcium, and fills the stomach so the child eats less iron-rich food. This is the biggest cause of iron deficiency in Indian children. Giving tea to small children — tannin in tea reduces iron absorption, and tea itself reduces appetite. Never give tea to children. Not soaking dals or grains in water before cooking — they contain iron inhibitors like phytate that reduce iron absorption. Not giving proper deworming medicine on time — Indian guidelines recommend deworming every 6 months from age 1 to 18: 200 mg dose for 1–2 years, 400 mg for 2–18 years, free under government programs. Iron and folate syrup/tablets are also free under government programs. Not giving iron-rich food or iron supplementation after 6 months — a newborn is born with iron stores from the mother. Term babies (born after 37 weeks) need iron supplementation started after 6 months; preterm babies need it starting from 1 month of age, since they don't get a full iron store from the mother. Between 6 months and 1 year, the iron requirement is about 11 mg per day — quite high, because the brain and body are developing rapidly at this stage. City-living children and those eating a lot of junk food with few fresh fruits and vegetables are also at risk. Bonus tip: pair iron-rich food with vitamin C Giving vitamin C-rich food with iron-rich food doubles iron absorption — squeeze a little lemon into dal, or combine iron-rich foods with orange, mosambi, papaya or mango. Managing constipation and side effects from iron supplements Mix the iron drop or syrup into orange, mosambi or papaya juice — this avoids teeth staining, masks the bad taste, and the vitamin C in the juice boosts absorption. If constipation occurs, give the iron drop/syrup twice a week instead of daily, and regularly give prunes, which have natural sugars with a laxative effect that soften stool. Give extra water too. Black-coloured stool while on iron supplements is normal and not a cause for worry — it's due to the iron's colour. General supplementation dose (when there is no diagnosed deficiency, just supplementing) is about 1 mg per kg — e.g. 10 mg for a 10 kg child. Always get the exact formulation and dose prescribed by your doctor, since different iron preparations have different strengths per ml (10 mg, 5 mg, 6 mg per ml, etc.), and excess iron can also be harmful. 7 iron-rich recipes (one per day of the week) Ragi beetroot puree (with dates) Oats and moong dal khichdi (with a squeeze of lemon or curd) Palak masoor dal khichdi Broccoli and moong dal puree Sweet potato and masoor dal puree Oats and prunes puree (also helps with constipation) Sooji with raisins or dates puree A recipe document is available by commenting "Iron."
