Can Babies Use AC, Cooler or Fan? Safe Temperature, Clothing & Precautions

Dr. Sandip Gupta

A pediatrician answers a very commonly asked question: can we use AC, cooler or fan for small babies? He shares a recent video consultation where a mother was not using the AC even though her baby, under a month old, was crying, uncomfortable and sweating — out of fear the baby would get too cold — and clarifies the doubt for parents. The answer: yes, AC, cooler and fan can be used even for small babies, provided some precautions are followed. Precautions covered in this video: 1. Set the right temperature Keep the AC between 24 and 27°C, which is considered room temperature, and never let it go below 20°C, which is unsafe for a baby. This matters because adults have good thermoregulation and can maintain internal body temperature within limits even when the outside environment changes, but babies cannot — if the environment gets too cold or too hot, the baby becomes uncomfortable and distressed. 2. Pay attention to clothing Whenever the baby is in AC or cooler, put light clothing on the baby, and cover the head, hands and feet, with a thin layer of clothing over that. Small babies under one or two months need one extra layer compared to what an adult is comfortable in — if an adult is wearing two layers, the baby needs three — because the baby cannot manage temperature changes on its own, and this extra layer is what keeps the baby comfortable. 3. Never let the air blow directly on the baby The direct air from an AC, fan or cooler should not fall on the baby. Direct air can make the baby too cold, and it can dry the baby's skin and dry the nasal secretions, which the baby cannot clear. Keep the baby to one side, not directly under the airflow or swing — that way the baby gets the benefit of a balanced temperature without the harm. 4. Prevent dryness Use a good moisturiser on the baby to protect against the dryness mentioned above, and use saline nasal drops to keep the nose clean and clear, which keeps the baby comfortable. 5. Don't move the baby suddenly between temperatures Do not take the baby suddenly from an AC or cooler room to the outside. First switch off the AC or cooler, let the room temperature come close to the outside temperature, and then take the baby out — otherwise the sudden move from cold to heat causes discomfort. Similarly, when coming in from outside, the AC should not already be running, or the baby can have problems. 6. Keep the appliance clean Whenever you use an AC or cooler for the baby, maintain cleanliness. If these precautions are followed, there is no need to worry about using an AC, cooler or fan for your baby. Questions this video answers: Can I use AC, cooler or fan for a newborn or small baby? Is AC safe for a baby under one month old? What temperature should the AC be set at for a baby? What is the minimum safe temperature? Why can't babies regulate their own body temperature like adults? How should I dress my baby in AC or a cooler? How many layers does a baby need? Should the fan, cooler or AC air blow directly on the baby? Does AC dry a baby's skin or nose? What should I do about it? Can I take my baby straight from an AC room to outside? What should I do when coming in from outside into an AC room with a baby? My baby is sweating and uncomfortable in the heat but I'm scared to use AC — what should I do? Relevant for: parents of newborns and small babies, especially in summer, who are unsure whether to use AC, cooler or fan at home.
