Breastfeeding Diet: What Mothers Should Avoid, Foods That Cause Baby Gas & Myths Busted
Dr. Sandip Gupta
A pediatrician answers common questions and myths about a breastfeeding mother's diet — whether curd (cold food) causes the baby to catch cold, whether cow's milk is essential for milk supply, whether a breastfeeding mother must eat only boiled food and avoid sour or sweet foods — and gives a detailed list of what to avoid and what causes baby gas. Covered in this video: Foods/substances a breastfeeding mother should avoid or limit Caffeine-related foods: tea, coffee, chocolate, soda/caffeinated soft drinks. High caffeine can cause sleep problems and irritability/crankiness in the baby. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists guideline: up to about 200 mg caffeine per day is acceptable (roughly 1–2 cups of tea/coffee). The doctor's general recommendation: if not habituated, avoid caffeinated drinks and prefer fruits, coconut water and juices instead; if you do want it, 1 cup a day is fine, but avoid chocolate, soda and other caffeinated drinks. Alcohol: Never consume — alcohol passes into breast milk and negatively affects the baby's brain development. Smoking: Not recommended for the mother, and second-hand smoke around the mother and baby is also unsafe and can seriously harm the baby. High-mercury fish: Avoid swordfish, king mackerel, and shark — high mercury content negatively affects brain development. Normal/regular fish can be eaten in small quantities. Non-veg food myth clarified: Lactating mothers CAN eat non-veg in moderate amounts if not allergic — it's a good protein source. Just don't overeat it, since it's harder to digest. Vegetarian mothers should ensure adequate protein through dairy (cheese, paneer), nut powders or soaked nuts, and chickpeas. Processed/sugary foods: Avoid due to preservatives and artificial flavours; these also crowd out the healthy nutrition a mother needs. A lactating mother needs about 500 extra kcal/day plus more fluids — junk food (chips, pizza, burgers) and sugary drinks displace this needed nutrition. Personal allergens: Avoid any food you are personally allergic to (e.g. nuts, eggs). Medicines/antibiotics: Always consult your doctor while breastfeeding, since some medicines pass into breast milk and can affect the baby. Iron and calcium supplements prescribed by your gynecologist should be taken. Foods that can cause gas in the baby Note: this varies by baby — not every food causes gas in every baby. First try standard remedies: proper burping, correct feeding/latching technique, simeticone-based drops when the baby cries from gas, cyclic leg movements, colic massage. If gas persists despite these, consider dietary restriction as a trial. Foods commonly linked to baby gas: caffeinated drinks (as above); cow's milk and dairy products (try eliminating for 2 weeks and see if gas reduces, replacing protein with nut powder, soybean chunks or other sources if dairy is cut); cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and radish (mooli) — avoid or reduce if suspected. General tip: foods that cause gas in the mother's own body often cause gas in the baby too — track and avoid your own gas-triggering foods. Myths clarified "Must drink cow's milk to make breast milk": Not true — cow's milk is not required, but adequate liquid/water intake is essential, since breast milk is about 85% water. "C-section mothers can't eat sour or sweet foods": Normal amounts of natural sour/sweet foods (fruits, lemon, orange) are fine; there's no need to avoid them (excess separately-bought sugary sweets is different). "Eating cold food like curd gives the baby a cold": Completely false — eating curd does not give the baby a cold; no need to worry about this. "Should a mother with mild fever/illness stop breastfeeding?": For minor/mild illness, the mother should continue breastfeeding.
