Baby Teeth Care & Oral Hygiene by Age: Preventing Cavities in Children | Pediatrician Guide
Dr. Sandip Gupta
This video explains why dental care matters for children, the age-wise oral hygiene routine from birth onward, and 3 essential rules to prevent cavities and dark/brown stains on teeth. What is covered in this video: Why milk teeth care matters: Milk teeth (primary teeth) help with chewing, speech, facial shape, and guide the correct direction of upcoming permanent teeth. Poor cleaning can lead to cavities, infection, and even painful procedures like root canals at a young age. Age-wise oral hygiene routine: 0-6 months (before teeth appear): Oral cavity cleaning should start right after birth. Wrap a clean cotton cloth soaked in lukewarm/clean water around a finger and gently clean the baby's gums and tongue twice a day. 6-12 months (first tooth appears): Use a silicone finger brush soaked in water once the first tooth appears (toothpaste is not needed at this age). Clean the teeth from both front and back. 1-2 years: Use a rice-grain-sized amount of non-fluoridated baby toothpaste. Brush twice a day (morning and night) with a finger brush or soft baby brush. After brushing, wipe excess paste from inside the mouth with a wet cotton cloth wrapped around a finger. 2 years and above: A pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste can be used. Brush thoroughly using circular and horizontal back-and-forth motions. 3 essential rules to prevent cavities and dark/brown stains: Don't put the baby to sleep with a milk bottle at night — this causes milk to coat the teeth and bacteria to grow (Nursing Bottle Caries). Give milk at night from a bowl-spoon or glass, or wipe the teeth with a clean cloth after the bottle. Rinse/clean teeth after eating anything sweet — give water immediately and clean the teeth. Don't feed the child from your own used plate/spoon (jhoota khana) — bacteria from an adult's mouth can transfer to the child's mouth and cause cavities.
