Wrong Feeding Position Can Cause Pneumonia in Babies — The Correct Way to Feed

Dr. Sandip Gupta

This video warns about a big mistake parents make while feeding: giving milk or food to a baby while the baby is lying flat. Points covered in the video: The mistake – feeding milk or food to a child lying down in that position is a very big mistake, and it creates a risk of pneumonia for the baby. Why it happens – the child's breathing tube (windpipe) lies in front of the food pipe. The bubbles you see coming from the baby's mouth are caused by the baby's breath coming out. The risk – if the food or milk mistakenly goes into the child's breathing tube, the child can get aspiration pneumonia, and because of that the child may sometimes need to be admitted and may even need ventilation. Correct position for milk – whenever you feed milk to a baby, feed in a semi-recline position, meaning the baby's head should be a little higher than the rest of the body. Correct position for solid food – when feeding solid food, make the child sit and then feed, so that the child does not have choking or aspiration. Relevant for: parents who feed their baby lying down or in bed; parents asking about the correct feeding and breastfeeding position for newborns and infants; parents worried about choking, aspiration, milk going into the windpipe, or bubbles coming from the baby's mouth during feeds; parents starting solid foods and unsure how the child should be seated; and parents wanting to understand aspiration pneumonia risk in babies.
