Why You Should Not Give Janam Ghutti to Your Baby — 4 Reasons
Dr. Sandip Gupta
If you are giving your child janam ghutti on someone's recommendation, this video is for you. Why parents give it: Many parents give janam ghutti thinking it will strengthen the child's digestion and reduce the child's gas. Four reasons the doctor advises against it: No scientific evidence – there is no scientific evidence for these benefits. Unstudied ingredients – janam ghutti contains many ayurvedic ingredients, and there is no study on exactly what effect they have on our body. Honey base – in the ayurvedic preparation, honey is used as the base, and honey is not safe for children under 1 year of age. No fixed standard – every company makes janam ghutti with its own different composition. There is no fixed standard, so we cannot know what effect a particular janam ghutti will have on the child. What to use instead: If your child has colic pain or a gas problem, use simethicone-based drops — they are safe for children and help relieve the child's gas. Relevant for: parents giving or considering janam ghutti for their baby; parents told by family or others that ghutti improves digestion or reduces gas; parents asking whether honey is safe for a child under 1 year; parents whose baby has colic pain or gas; and parents asking what safe alternative can be used for a baby's gas.
