Why Mosquito Coils Are Dangerous for Children — Never Use Them at Home
Dr. Sandip Gupta
This video explains why mosquito coils, which used to be used a lot in India, should not be used where there are children. The problem: The fume that comes out from burning a mosquito coil does drive away mosquitoes, but it is toxic for children and can create problems in their respiratory system. Other risks: If the child touches it there is a risk of burns, and there is also a risk of fire in the house. How much smoke: The fume from a single mosquito coil produces more smoke than 100 cigarettes, which is potentially very harmful for the lungs. The rule: Mosquito coils should not be used at all in a home where there are children. Relevant for: parents using mosquito coils at home with small children; parents asking whether mosquito coil smoke is harmful for babies; parents worried about breathing problems, cough or lung damage from indoor smoke; parents concerned about burn and fire risk from coils near children; and parents looking for safer mosquito protection at home. Every child is different — please consult your pediatrician if your child has breathing difficulty, persistent cough, or any reaction after exposure to smoke, and seek immediate medical attention in case of a burn.
