Which Thermometer to Use for a Child — Digital vs Mercury vs Infrared
Dr. Sandip Gupta
Which thermometer should you use? In the doctor's opinion, from his clinical practice, he likes to keep things simple for parents, so he always advises using a digital thermometer. Digital thermometer — the recommendation. You can take one from any good company that comes with a one year warranty. It is very cheap — a good company's one comes for roughly ₹200 and up. It lasts a long time, does not break easily, and gives an accurate reading. Mercury thermometer — do not use. A mercury thermometer contains mercury, and since the thermometer is made of glass it can break, so there are chances of injury from the glass. Also, if children inhale the mercury, there is a risk to them from that as well. Infrared thermometer. Infrared thermometers are being used a lot nowadays, but the problem with them is that this thermometer is not that accurate. Relevant for: parents buying a thermometer for their child; parents asking whether a digital, mercury or infrared thermometer is best for babies; parents asking why mercury thermometers are unsafe around children; parents wondering whether contactless infrared thermometers give accurate readings; and parents asking what a good thermometer should cost and what warranty to look for.
