Which Milk to Use in Kheer for a 6 Month Old — Breast Milk, Formula or Cow Milk?

Dr. Sandip Gupta

Many parents ask which milk to use when making kheer for a 6 month old baby — breast milk, formula milk, or cow milk. This video answers that. Do not boil breast milk or formula milk: Boiling mother's milk damages the antibodies, enzymes and nutrition inside it, so it should not be boiled. Similarly, boiling formula milk damages the nutrients in it. How to use breast milk or formula in kheer: First cook a cereal in water — for example suji, dalia or rice. Once it has softened and cooled down, mix the milk in on top, and that kheer can be given to the baby. If using cow milk: Cow milk can be boiled, and the cereal can be cooked in it and given to the child. Cow milk can be given to babies above 6 months when mixed with cereals. Relevant for: parents starting solids at 6 months and making kheer, suji, dalia or rice porridge; parents asking whether breast milk or formula milk can be boiled or heated; parents worried about losing nutrients and antibodies when heating milk; parents asking whether cow milk can be given at 6 months; and parents wanting the correct order of cooking cereal and adding milk for a baby's meal.
