When to Start Roti for Your Baby — Right Age and Correct Way to Give It

Dr. Sandip Gupta

Many mothers asked this question after watching the previous video: when should we start giving roti to children? This video answers it. Before roti: In the beginning, when we give food to children between 6 and 8 months, we give single-item purées — rice purée, dal purée, or fruit and vegetable purées — so the child learns to eat solid food. When to start roti: Once 8 months are complete and the child's ninth month is starting, you can begin roti for the child. How to give it: Soak the roti for a little while in dal or milk, then mash it well and soften it, and feed the child a little at a time. Roti has good fibre, and mixing it with milk or dal makes it a balanced nutrition. Do make sure it is well mashed and soft so the child can swallow it easily. Relevant for: parents starting solids and asking at what age roti can be introduced; parents of 6–8 month olds giving purées and wondering what comes next; parents asking how to soften roti for a baby and what to mix it with; parents wanting to know about fibre and balanced nutrition in a baby's meal; and parents concerned about choking and whether food is soft enough for the baby to swallow.
