When to Start First Food and Semi-Solid Feeding? Why 6 Months Is the Right Age

Dr. Sandip Gupta

This question is on many parents' minds and is asked very frequently: when should first food or semi-solid feeding be started for a child? The answer: The correct age to start semi-solid feeding is 6 months. This is the age recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics. Why 6 months: The gut is mature enough – by 6 months the child's intestine becomes mature enough to handle cereals, fruits and vegetables. Sitting and head control – after about 6 months the child learns to sit and can sit for a little while, and gets good head control. This makes it easier for the child to take semi-solid food. Milk alone is no longer sufficient – at this age mother's milk is no longer sufficient for the child calorie-wise and nutrition-wise. This is why the additional food given is called complementary feeding. Relevant for: parents asking at what age to start first food, solids or semi-solid feeding; parents wanting to know what WHO and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics recommend; parents asking why 6 months specifically and not earlier; parents wondering whether breast milk alone is enough after 6 months; and parents wanting to understand what complementary feeding means.
