When Can Babies Start Drinking Water? Correct Amount for 6–12 Months
Dr. Sandip Gupta
A mother asks whether her 5-month-old baby can be given water. This video answers when to start water for babies and how much to give. Under 6 months — no separate water. Babies under 6 months should not be given water separately, because mother's milk contains 85% water, so a baby under 6 months gets their entire water requirement from milk. If you give formula milk, the water requirement is met from the formula milk as well. There is no need for extra water. 6 to 9 months — 120 ml a day. Give roughly 30 ml each time after feeding semi-solids. 9 to 12 months — about 240 ml a day. Give 30 to 60 ml of water each time after a semi-solid feed. Relevant for: parents asking whether a newborn or a baby under 6 months needs water; parents on formula feeding wondering if extra water is required; parents starting solids and asking how much water a 6–9 month or 9–12 month old should drink; and parents wanting to know when to offer water in relation to meals.
