Vitamin D Drops for Babies — Which Brand, Correct Dose, and Best Time to Give

Dr. Sandip Gupta

Parents keep asking questions about vitamin D drops. This video answers three of them. 1. Which brand of vitamin D to give? Whichever vitamin D drop your doctor has prescribed can be used. The doctor shows a JustDee vitamin D drop of 400 units; an Ultra version is also available. One good thing about JustDee is that it has no added sugar. What matters is the strength — read how many international units are in 1 ml. If it is 400 IU per ml, give 1 ml, till one year of age. If the vitamin D drop is 800 IU, then giving 0.5 ml… (see note below). A child's daily requirement of vitamin D is 400 units. 2. What if the baby vomits after taking vitamin D drops? In that case you can mix the vitamin D drop into breast milk or formula milk and give it to the baby. 3. Morning or night? You can give vitamin D at any time of the day, but it is better to give it in the morning so it is easier to digest, and it should be given along with milk, because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. Relevant for: parents asking which vitamin D drops to buy for their baby; parents wanting to know the correct daily dose and how to read the strength on the bottle; parents whose baby vomits after taking vitamin D drops; parents asking whether to give vitamin D in the morning or at night; and parents asking whether vitamin D can be mixed with breast milk or formula. Every child is different — please consult your pediatrician for the correct vitamin D brand and dose for your child, and follow the strength printed on your bottle.
