The Safe Way to Give Steam to a Baby — Why Direct Steam Is Dangerous

Dr. Sandip Gupta

This video warns that giving steam to small children directly can be very dangerous, and explains the correct method instead. Points covered in the video: Why direct steam is dangerous – water splashing can cause burns to the child, and giving such hot steam directly can also cause problems in the child's lungs. The correct method – first turn on the hot shower inside the bathroom and let the steam collect. Once the steam has fully collected, turn off the shower, then take the child in your lap and stand inside the bathroom for 5 to 10 minutes. The benefit – giving steam indirectly this way gives a lot of relief in children's cold and cough. Their nose opens up, which helps the child in feeding and in staying active. The doctor mentions that the next video will explain the difference between steam and nebulization, and when each should be used for children. Relevant for: parents giving steam to a baby or small child for cold and cough; parents asking whether direct steam from a bowl or steamer is safe for infants; parents worried about burns or lung problems from steam; parents whose child has a blocked nose and is struggling to feed or stay active; and parents wanting a safe bathroom-shower steam method for babies.
