Oats for Babies: A Superfood for Constipation, Brain Development and Energy

Dr. Sandip Gupta

This video explains why oats are a superfood for children, when to start them, and how to give them. Benefits: Giving oats solves the constipation problem in children, because oats contain very good fibre. They contain iron, which helps in the child's brain development and also helps in blood formation. Oats also contain B1, B5, B6 and folate, which further help in the child's brain development. Oats are a source of complex carbohydrates, so they provide energy to children. When to start: Start oats once the child has completed 6 months and you are starting semi-solids. How to give: Take plain oats and cook them well in milk or water before feeding the child. Do not take flavoured oats — take plain oats, cook them well until soft, and give. To improve the taste you can mix in banana or apple purée, and prune purée as well. The doctor mentions he will also share three oats recipes that are very good for children's health. Relevant for: parents starting solids or semi-solids at 6 months and asking whether oats are suitable; parents whose child has constipation and who are looking for fibre-rich foods; parents asking about iron-rich foods and foods for brain development in babies; parents confused between plain and flavoured oats for kids; and parents wanting to know how to cook oats for a baby and what purées can be mixed in.
