Mango for Babies — When to Start, Benefits and 4 Precautions

Dr. Sandip Gupta

Will giving mango to a child cause heat in their stomach, and when can we start mango for a baby? This video answers both. When to start: Mango can be started after the child completes 6 months. In the beginning, for 6 to 8 month olds, mango is given in purée form. Benefits: Mango is a very good source of vitamin A and vitamin C. Vitamin A and C boost children's immunity, and vitamin A helps with children's eyesight. Mango also contains fibre, which strengthens the child's digestive system. Four precautions while giving mango: Soak it first – whenever you give mango to the child, keep it soaked in water for at least half an hour to one hour, so that any harmful pesticides or chemicals on it are washed off. Only ripe mango – never give raw mango to the child. Give a properly ripened mango, and do not give a mango that has started to rot. Purée properly for 6–8 month olds – peel the skin off well, make a proper purée, and remove the fibre from it before giving it to the child. Limit the quantity – do not give mango in very large quantities. Give a limited quantity (shown on screen in the video), and instead of giving mango daily, give it three times a week, because the child should also be taught to eat other foods. Relevant for: parents asking whether mango causes heat in a baby's stomach; parents asking at what age mango can be started; parents wanting to know how to make mango purée for a 6–8 month old; parents concerned about pesticides on fruit; parents asking whether raw mango is safe for babies; and parents asking how much mango and how often a child should have it.
