Is Your Baby Getting Enough Milk? 6 Signs to Check
Dr. Sandip Gupta
Many mothers are confused about this: my baby drinks milk for only 10 minutes and falls asleep — is my baby getting enough milk, or should I start top feed? This video gives 6 signs to check whether the baby is getting enough milk. Good weight gain – if the baby is getting enough milk, the baby's weight gain will be good. Urine output – the baby passes urine more than six times a day, and the colour of the urine is completely clear, like water. Satisfied after feeding – the baby feels satisfied after drinking milk, plays, and sleeps well for two to three hours. Feeding frequency – if the baby feeds 8 to 12 times, they are getting enough milk. Swallowing sounds – while feeding, you will hear swallowing sounds and see movement in the baby's throat. Moist mouth – when you look inside the baby's mouth, the mouth is wet — the tongue and lips are moist. This means the baby's hydration status is good and the baby is getting enough milk. Relevant for: mothers worried that their baby feeds for only a short time and falls asleep; mothers unsure whether their breast milk supply is enough; parents considering starting top feed or formula; parents wanting to know how many wet nappies or urine passes are normal; parents asking how many times a day a baby should feed; and parents wanting to check a baby's hydration at home.
