How to Use a Thermometer on a Child — Correct Technique and When It's a Fever

This video demonstrates how to use a thermometer on children. How to do it: Switch on the thermometer — the temperature shows low and starts flashing. Place it in the child's armpit, making sure the sensor goes properly into the armpit. Hold it in place until it beeps. Read the temperature at the time it beeps. In the demonstration the child's temperature shows 98. What counts as fever: When the armpit temperature is below 99, it is not considered fever. When the temperature goes above 99, we consider it fever. In the demonstration, the child does not have fever. A common mistake: Parents often place the thermometer over the clothes — this is the wrong technique. It has to be placed inside the clothes, in direct contact with the skin.
