How to Dress Your Baby in Winter — 4 Tips to Prevent Rashes and Cold
Dr. Sandip Gupta
This video starts with a case where a baby developed a rash all over the skin in winter, because woolen clothing was put directly against the baby's skin. The doctor then shares 4 tips on how to dress children in the cold season. Tip 1 — How many layers. Put on just one extra layer more than the number of layers in which the adult, i.e. the mother, is feeling comfortable. If you are wearing three layers, the baby needs one extra layer — four. Tip 2 — The innermost layer (most important). The garment worn innermost, which comes in direct contact with the baby's skin, should be made of cotton (sooti kapda). Tip 3 — Dress in layers. Put clothes on one over the other rather than in one thick piece, so that when the temperature changes you can remove a layer or add an extra layer. Tip 4 — Cap, mittens and socks. When it is very cold, always put a cap on the head, mittens on the hands and socks on the feet. A lot of heat is lost from the child's head, and this prevents that and protects the child from catching cold. The doctor mentions the next video will cover what to feed children to boost immunity in winter. Relevant for: parents dressing a newborn or small child in winter; parents whose baby developed a rash from woolen clothes; parents asking how many layers a baby needs compared to adults; parents wanting to know what fabric should touch the baby's skin; and parents asking whether caps, mittens and socks are necessary for babies in cold weather.
