Ghee for Babies — When to Start, How Much Per Day, and Its Benefits

Dr. Sandip Gupta

This video answers when to start ghee for children, how much ghee can be given in a day, and what benefits it gives. Benefits: Helps in weight gain – ghee is a good source of fat for children, and it contains short chain and medium chain fatty acids, which are easy to absorb. Brain growth – a child's brain grows 80% in the first two years, and good fat is needed for that growth, which ghee provides. Vitamin absorption – ghee helps in absorbing vitamins A, D, E and K. When to start: Ghee can be started after the child completes 6 months. How much per day: 6 to 12 months – 5 ml a day, i.e. one small spoon. Give it as half a spoon twice a day, adding ghee on top of the child's porridge or dal. 1 to 3 years – 5 to 10 ml a day. Relevant for: parents asking at what age ghee can be started for a baby; parents wanting to know the correct daily quantity of ghee by age; parents looking for healthy weight gain foods for children; parents interested in good fats for brain development; and parents asking how to add ghee to a baby's porridge or dal.
