Flat Head in Babies — Why It Happens and Techniques to Correct It
Dr. Sandip Gupta
This video is a consultation with a baby who has developed a flat head, and explains why it happens and how to correct it. Why it happens: Flat head occurs when the baby sleeps more on one side — if the baby sleeps on one side, the head becomes flat on that side. Techniques covered in the video: Mustard (rai) pillow – if a mustard seed pillow is kept under the baby's head, the pressure gets redistributed and the head does not become flat on one side. Position on the raised side – lay the baby for a while, with the help of a pillow, on the side where the head is protruding/raised. This will help make the head round on that side. Tummy time – give the baby tummy time so there is no pressure on the head. To give tummy time, lay the baby on their stomach, place their hands to the side, and show them any toy or sound-making toy. This way the baby's head stays independent, no pressure falls on it, and the baby's head becomes round. Relevant for: parents whose baby's head has become flat on one side; parents asking why flat head happens and whether sleeping position causes it; parents wanting to know how a mustard/rai pillow helps; parents asking how to position the baby to correct a flat spot; and parents wanting to know how to give tummy time correctly.
