Child Not Eating During Fever? How to Feed and Keep Them Hydrated
Dr. Sandip Gupta
Parents get very worried when a child is not eating anything during fever. This video explains what to do. Feed small amounts, more often: During fever the child will not eat much at one time, so you have to give small amounts frequently. If the child normally eats four to five times, during fever you will need to give six to eight times in small amounts. If the child eats 50% of their regular portion size, that will be sufficient for them. What to give: Give the child semi-solid or liquid feeds — such as dal khichdi, dalia, curd rice, vegetable soup, or food purée. These are easier for the child to swallow and are easily digested. Hydration: Keep a close watch on hydration. During fever give the child coconut water and fruit juice so that the child's hydration is maintained. Relevant for: parents whose child has stopped eating or is eating very little during fever; parents asking how much and how often to feed a child with fever; parents wanting to know which foods are easy to swallow and digest during illness; parents worried about dehydration in a child with fever; and parents asking what fluids to give during fever.
