Baby Was Fair at Birth but Getting Darker? Why It Happens and How to Care for Baby Skin

Dr. Sandip Gupta

Many mothers ask this: my baby was very fair at birth and now the colour is gradually becoming darker. This video explains why. The reason: Before birth the baby was protected inside the mother's womb. As soon as the baby comes out, a few weeks later, because of the environment and sunlight, the baby's natural colour gradually starts appearing and the skin becomes a little lighter or changes. After 6 to 12 months, the child's original skin colour comes in, which depends on the skin colour of the parents. There is no need to panic about this. Three things to keep the child's skin healthy: For children above 6 months, use baby sunscreen whenever you take them out in the sun. After bathing, apply a good company's moisturiser on the child's face. Always use a baby bar while washing the child's face. Relevant for: parents noticing their baby's skin tone changing after birth; parents asking why a newborn looks fairer at birth and darker later; parents asking when a child's original skin colour settles; parents wanting to know from what age baby sunscreen can be used; and parents asking about moisturiser and face washing products for babies.
