Baby's Eye Always Watering? The NLD Massage That Fixes a Blocked Tear Duct

Dr. Sandip Gupta

Small babies often have tears constantly falling from the eye. This video explains why, and shows the massage that resolves it. The cause: In many babies the tear duct is partially blocked at the time of birth, and because of that blockage tears keep falling. The fix — NLD massage: Apply pressure on the part of the nose that is near the eye and stroke downward. Do this massage three times a day — morning, afternoon and night — and each time do five such strokes, pressing on that part of the nose near the eye and moving downward. Important: Never apply pressure on the eye itself. The pressure goes on the nose — on the part of the nose that is close to the eye. How it works: This massage builds pressure in the tear duct system and the tear duct opens up, which solves the problem of tears falling. Relevant for: parents whose baby has watery eyes or constant tearing from one or both eyes; parents asking about a blocked tear duct or nasolacrimal duct blockage in newborns; parents wanting to know how to do NLD massage correctly, how many strokes and how many times a day; and parents unsure where exactly to apply pressure so as not to press on the baby's eye.
