5 Summer Mistakes to Avoid With Babies Under 1 Year
Dr. Sandip Gupta
This video covers 5 mistakes we should not make with small children under 1 year of age during summer. Don't dust powder on the face or body – powder can irritate the child's skin and can cause problems in their lungs. Don't put synthetic clothes on them – put 100% cotton loose clothes on them so air reaches the child's skin. Prefer clothing one size bigger. Never keep the child directly under the AC or cooler air – keep them a little to the side, and if using AC, keep the temperature between 24°C and 27°C. Don't take children out in the sun between 10 and 4 – avoid the sun in those hours. Don't give water to babies under 6 months – even in summer, breastfeed frequently to maintain their hydration. For a 6 to 12 month old baby, give 30 ml of water each time after a solid feed, and 120 to 240 ml of water in a day. Relevant for: parents caring for a newborn or under-1-year-old baby in summer; parents asking whether baby powder is safe in hot weather; parents choosing summer clothing and fabric for babies; parents asking whether AC or cooler is safe for infants and what temperature to keep; parents asking about safe sun hours for babies; and parents asking whether babies under 6 months need water in summer and how much water a 6–12 month old should get.
