5 Signs Your Baby Is Ready to Start Semi-Solid Food

Dr. Sandip Gupta

This video lists five signs by which you can tell that your baby is ready to eat semi-solid food. Sitting with support – the baby sits properly with the support of their hands. Full head control – the baby's head does not fall forward or backward. Reaching out for objects – if you place something in front of the baby, the baby extends their hand and grabs it, and often starts putting it in their mouth. Watching you eat – if you are eating, the baby watches you attentively. Opening the mouth – if you take some food in front of the baby's mouth, the baby opens their mouth. If all five of these signs are present in your baby — which generally are achieved after the completion of 6 months, i.e. after 180 days — it means your baby is ready to eat semi-solid food. Relevant for: parents wondering when to start solids or semi-solids for their baby; parents asking whether their baby is developmentally ready at 6 months; parents looking for readiness signs like sitting with support, head control, reaching for objects, watching others eat, and opening the mouth for food; and parents unsure whether to start before or after 180 days. Every child is different — please consult your pediatrician before starting semi-solids, especially if your baby is under 6 months, was born preterm, or has delayed milestones or poor weight gain.
